See, Be Seen: Community Portraits. May 4 – September 23 2018

Viva la Mujer by Jesus Barraza and Melanie Cervantes of Dignidad Rebelde

“Historically in the West portraiture has been used to document the history of those in power who had the wealth to hire artists to paint their images. As artists we have chosen to uplift those in our community, making images of the people who have struggled to change the world we live in.” – Jesus Barraza and Melanie Cervantes, Dignidad Rebelde

A portrait captures so much more than just a likeness. A portrait is a conversation. A creative collaboration between the subject and the maker. A portrait can tell a story, reveal a truth, or pose a question. From drawing and painting to sound, video, or sculpture portraits can help us see or be seen in new ways.

See, Be Seen is of, by, and for our community. It consists of over 250 portraits of people in our community, by artists in our community, in order for everyone to celebrate the unique artistry in and many faces of Santa Cruz County. The exhibition also includes five anchor artworks from diverse, well-known artists from across CA. Visitors to the exhibition will even have an opportunity to share their own portrait!

Thank you to everyone who submitted work for this exhibition. Special thanks to our anchor artists Star Amerasu, Angélica Becerra, Cynthia Brannvall, Jesus Barraza and Melanie Cervantes of Dignidad Rebelde, Sanaa Khan, Marvin Plummer, and Self Help Graphics.
