Free First Friday: Mothers of Men Screening

Save to:

Travel back in time to Santa Cruz in 1917 with a screening and talk about Mothers of Men, the recently restored silent film immortalizing the Suffrage movement.

Explore three floors of exhibitions for free, dance to live music by El Trio Guadalupano and get hands-on with an all-ages art activity making sugar skulls.

HISTORY TALKS | 5:00-6:30pm | Auditorium | Explore a screening of Mothers of Men and a talk from James Mockoski who spearheaded the restoration of the film. James is the Film Archivist for Francis Ford Coppola’s company American Zoetrope. He holds a MA in Film Studies and Archiving from the University of East Anglia. During his undergrad studies he received the UCSC Chancellor Award in 1998 for his research on local Santa Cruz film history. James sprearheaded the restoration of Mothers of Men (1917) in partnership with the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, BFI, and Library of Congress and has enlisted the help of preservationist Rob Bryne. The film will be on loop in the Auditorium for the rest of the evening.

FREE EXHIBITIONS | Explore three floors of exhibitions for free.

Santa Cruz Collects – Explore personal items from curious collectors all over Santa Cruz County. Learn about people in Santa Cruz through the flip-flops, corks, and cat whiskers they collect. Explore how artists use collections to create extraordinary assemblage sculptures. Examine how the items we collect do more than tell us about ourselves; they shine a light on things we may never have known about each other.

Screaming Hand – Celebrate the Screaming Hand’s 30th anniversary. Explore original art by Jim Phillips and 200 contemporary international artists influenced by this fundamental icon of youth skate culture on the 3rd Floor Art Forum Gallery.

Chamber of Heart & Mystery —  Dive into this imaginarium for all ages. The Chamber of Heart and Mystery invites you to explore the mysteries surrounding the human heart. Staged as a fictional study for Dr. Cora X. Crux, renowned explorer of the heart and its mysteries, this exhibition is filled with curious objects and art work.

LIVE MUSIC | 6:30-9pm | Atrium | El Trio Guadalupano – Dance to live music with new friends and old ones.

SUGAR SKULLS | 5:00-8:00 | Classroom – Join us in the classroom to decorate sugary sweet tokens with family and friends in remembrance of those who have passed.
