3rd Friday August: Santa Cruz Music Night

MusicLogoSanta Cruz Music at the MAH is back with a thrilling explosion of musical performances, music lessons, instrument making workshops and sound art pieces.  Local Santa Cruz musicians, artists and organizations will fill the  museum and Abbott Square with a variety of music. Bring your own instrument and join in the fun.

From Samba to Jazz, Indie Rock to Bluegrass, and Blues to Rock, a series of ongoing performances in Abbott Square will celebrate diverse local talent and have you dancing all evening.

Sound artist David Coll will show his interactive metal sound panels. Andrew Meave and Blair Crissman will create an immersive sound art installation that creates sound and colors that react to the frequency and amplitude of your brainwaves. Inside you can also create abstract ink prints from the power of the speakers.

Join in the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz as they sing and play all evening. Kuzanga Marimba will be playing on the back patio and hosting a hula hoop fest and showing visitors how to play some instruments. Bring your own instruments for a slow folk jam where you’ll learn basic music theory and jam with Jayme Kelly Curtis. Watch harpist Adam Free, or bring your banjo to play with Dave Guarente. Take a singing harmony workshop with Leah Ray Mendez.

Lanier Sammons, our current Participatory Performance Artist in Residence will showcase his audience-interactive composition installation. Musicians will be in each gallery interpreting visitor responses to create a collaborative composition. You can request to changes to the tempo, alter the pitch or describe your favorite sound for the musicians to respond to. Performance will feature a variety of musical instruments and musicians including: the guitar with Jay Arms, the oboe with Kyle Bruckmann, percussion with Camile Chitwood, the saxophone with Andre Marquetti, percussion by Cameron Mozee-Baum, the cello by Crystal Pascucci, the clarinet by Aram Shelton, sound engineering by Adam Pardee and sculptures by Kyle Lane-McKinley and Wes Modes.

Rick Turner an Elias Turner will demonstrate ukulele design and construction from handmade to computer generated designs. Brush up on your Santa Cruz Music History with Music Trivia questions in between performances in Abbott Square. Fred Carlson will share his instrument design process and invite you to create your own guitar design with an expert. Become a rock star in a Moon Zooom fashion fabulous inspired photo booth.

Happy Dog Hot Dog will be in Abbott Square selling hot dogs as well.

Enjoy a more hands-on musical experience making your own instruments out of recycled materials like shoebox guitars, make art out of old records, design your own summertime CD cover or make bottle cap tambourines. Create your own song lyrics in a mad libs songwriting workshop or make sand move to sound with a violin bow. Come discover your own musical talents, meet music lovers, and dance to the rhythm of MAH’s musical adventure tonight.

Kid Happy Hour 4-5PM *Please note these activities will extend through the evening.

Do your kids love to make noise? Come join in on special musical activities geared for young children in our classroom from 4:00-5:00pm. Make an elastic band banjo, cardboard kazoos and jar top cymbals. Special guest, MusicalMe will lead a special kids only music jam session from 4-5:30 in the lobby area; come rock with us!
