Bike Month Celebration: Scavenger Hunts, Expeditions, & Spoke Cards

With bike-to-work days, demonstrations, and a themed First Friday Festival bike night at the MAH Ecology Action's Bike Month is an incredibly fun and informative community-wide celebration of our beloved sport. While it is typically hosted in May, Bike Month was moved to July this year and has been reimagined in these physically distant days.

You can see all the ways to celebrate Bike Month here on Ecology Action's website, but when asked how we can participate this year our team had to get creative. We now have three ways for you to participate this year:

  1. Join the history scavenger hunt, Race Through Time. Free online and safely distanced!
  2. Download the App RideWithGPS to go on Exhibition Expeditions – exhibition-related bike tours supplemented with stories, quotes, and more.
  3. Join the community craft project and make your own DIY Spoke Card.

Race Through Time

Join the competition from July 1st - July 29th for a chance to win epic prizes from local bike shops.

New clues, new prizes, and all available online for free! Plus, we've updated a lot of the clues to relate to our current mountain biking exhibition, Trailblazers.

The goal is to complete as many of the locations as possible and get the most points. There is no need to complete this in one day. You have all of July to get points, so make your routes to your experience level.

See how to play and download the PDF of clues here.

Exhibition Expeditions

Follow the stories, ideas, and artworks from our past exhibitions out into the world with the app RideWithGPS. A gallery tour and a bike ride at the same time! Available to use anytime.

  • Trailblazers: The Creative Story Behind Mountain Biking in Santa Cruz

Opened February 7th, 2020, and recently extended to October 4th, 2020, Trailblazers explores the roots and evolution of mountain biking and how it evolved in Santa Cruz County. Go on this 16-mile journey through the Santa Cruz Mountains to retrace the steps of mountain biking’s early innovators.

Exhibited March 1st, 2019 – June 23rd, 2019, artist Tessa Hulls unpacks her Chinese ancestry, and the stories behind Santa Cruz County’s vanished Chinatowns. Go on this 8-mile journey across Santa Cruz to learn more about the ways our ghosts shape the way we move through the world.

Exhibited from January 12th, 2018, to April 22nd, 2018, explore California’s coastal edge in this 29-mile journey visiting scenes captured by woodcut artist Tom Killion.

DIY Spoke Cards

A spoke card is a card placed in the spokes of a bicycle wheel. They lie parallel to the entire wheel adding some pizazz, personality, and fun to your bike.

Follow our step-by-step guide to make your own!

Materials Needed: Paper, Scissors, Clear Packing Tape, Any decor.

  1. Grab a piece of paper and cut it about the size of a playing card (2.5 x 3.5 in) or a tarot card (2.75 x 4.75 in).
  2. Decorate your spoke card in whatever way you like. This can be collage, drawing, or print something and attach it. You should do both sides. Browse some inspiration over on our Pinterest.
  3. Take clear packing tape and cover both sides of your paper completely. This is an at-home way to laminate it, making it more weatherproof. Trim the edges. *If you have a laminator use that.
  4. Place your card in the spoke of your bike! Then get peddling in the Race Through Time!

Take a photo and share it with us. We would love to see your creations. Take a picture and either tag @santacruzmah on social media or send an email to jamie@santacruzmah.org
