Mirando al Futuro: The Beach Flats Community Garden: November 2, 2018-September 2, 2019

Domingos Garden, Winter 2015 by Michelle Aguilar

New Year-Long History Gallery Pod This exhibition takes a look at the history of the Beach Flats Community Garden, tracing a unique story of cultivation, community change, and historical preservation.

The garden, located in the Beach Flats, has for over twenty five years been an important space for youth education, food production, passing along agroecological practices, traditions, and knowledge from Mexico and Central America.

The garden has gone through several iterations of programming, leadership, and relationship to the city yet participation and cultivation has remained consistent. Several current gardeners have worked their plots for over fifteen years. The history of the garden is a story about the histories of immigration, community organizing, alternative food movements, and changes in the Beach Flats neighborhood and city overall. What landmarks do we preserve? How do we honor cultural spaces?
