What can you make with an exacto knife and black paper? Nikki McClure transforms these humble materials into extraordinary graphic stories of daily life. Transcending everyday experiences like knitting, pond swimming and star-gazing, McClure creates striking depictions of otherwise missed moments.

It all began with a calendar illustrating foraged foods printed at Kinko’s. The success of the self-published calendar rocketed McClure through a self-made legacy which includes books, music, planners, t-shirts and more.

This approach was born and bred out of the Olympia, Washington independent music scene. There, local artists emphasized everything handmade and self-published. The idea was to do a lot with a little. The result was a rich community sharing artistry and ideas. McClure found herself deeply embedded in this community which shaped an ethic of hands-on and accessible artmaking. It’s no surprise that her work resonates in Santa Cruz as well.

McClure’s artwork can be found in kitchens and cubicles, scribbled-in notebooks and treasured album covers. These intricate creations are beautiful testaments to the magic moments in our everyday and make up a body of 17 years of dynamic work.

Nikki McClure: Cutting Her Own Path, 1996-2013 was organized by the Museum of Contemporary Craft in partnership with Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland, Oregon. View their exhibition website here.
